40 Journal Prompts for Self-Reflection (When You Don't Know Where to Start)

Self-reflection is one of the most useful things you can do for yourself, and one of the hardest to start. You open a fresh journal, pick up a pen, and... nothing. Or you fall back on writing three things you're grateful for, again.

A good question changes that. Here are 40 journal prompts for self-reflection to help you get past the blank page and actually learn something about yourself.

How to use these journal prompts

  • Pick one prompt. Not five. One is enough.
  • Set a timer for ten minutes and write without stopping or editing.
  • If a prompt doesn't land, skip it. If one makes you uncomfortable, it might be worth staying with.
  • Come back to your favourites every few months. Your answers will change.
